do: Perseid meteor shower

the best things in life are free.
the best things in life aren't things.
this celestial phenomenon is sure to deliver on both of those promises.

Tonight the sky will be illuminated. This is to be the first and biggest meteor shower outburst since 2009, with as many as 200 shooting stars an hour!

The Perseids will  rain down from July 17 to August 24, and will peak between midnight and early morning on August 12, putting on a spectacular show.

Here are a few tips to help plan ahead:
  1. plan on staying up late, maybe take a micro nap during the day or after work
  2. road trip - if you live in the city borders (like me) drive to somewhere with little to no light pollution
  3. find a wide open spot, not obstructed by buildings or trees, its best to be able to observe the largest amount of sky as possible so you wont need a telescope or binoculars. just the naked eye
  4. dress warm, it can get cold at night! (also bug balm/spray)
  5. watch between midnight and dawn hours
  6. bring good friends
  7. bring water. and snacks.
  8. bring a blanket and some pillows or lay on top of your car, it can be uncomfortable to crank your neck and head to the sky for hours. problem solved!
  9. wait 15-25 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark. if you bring a flashlight cover it with red cellophane gift wrap or silk.
  10. put your phone away, honestly it is difficult (read impossible) to get an Instagram worthy photo of this with just a phone. it's better to just have a screenless experience and live in the moment.
